Barrhead Housing funds £6,000 School PB’s

Barrhead Housing has distributed £6,000 to high-school projects selected by students. Cheques for £3,000 were presented to Barrhead High and St Luke’s High as part of the housing association’s Brighter Futures programme. As part of the programme, students were given the chance to vote on projects and decide where the cash would be spent.

The S2 leadership group at Barrhead High organised a vote with 217 students selecting 13 projects to each receive between £300 and £500 in funding. Barrhead Housing’s tenancy readiness officer, Hilary Smith said:

“It was great to work with pupils and staff on the concept of participatory budgeting. This effectively gave control and ownership of £3,000 at each school to the pupils, and for them to decide democratically how the money should be spent.”

The process at St Luke’s High saw hundreds of pupils voting on grants of up to £500 for projects that ranged from school trips and the Pupil Support Base to pencil cases, sports bibs and picnic benches.

The funds were provided by Barrhead Housing’s Brighter Futures programme, which is supported by the Young Start National Lottery’s Community Fund.
