The World Atlas of Participatory Budgeting represents the widest compilation of data to date on PB processes across the planet.

It is a collaborative work of more than 70 authors, who voluntarily made themselves available to collect and analyse information that would enable better understanding of the spread of these initiatives in very diverse contexts.

One of the main motivations of this initiative was to assess the growing reach of participatory budgeting and to understand the main trends over the last 30 years, through a high-level analysis on the data in each country, and on  different continents.

Using four international indices or themes, related to the common objectives of these processes over which there is a fairly broad consensus, made it possible to order over 11000 identified PB processes.

Themes such as levels of commitment to the promotion of democracy, the fight against corruption, human development and the happiness of the populations.

The World Atlas of PB contains many examples of interest, including unreleased data and some surprising results. It was edited by Nelson Dias, Sahsil Enriquez and Simone Julio and was produced in Portugal. It is the desire of the team to broaden the research in future editions, thereby reinforcing our understanding of participatory budgeting across the world.
